Secrets of the town of Hallows Creek continue to unfold as the children and the medical staff of Saint Juliana’s continue fighting for the stability of the research study and the Treaty of Earthly Peace. Maurpikios Fiddler and the Others have returned to school to begin their seventh grade year, but the chosen one- young Maurpikios Fiddler has a secret that he has yet to reveal. Saint Juliana has told him that he must be the one to find the six remaining Legacy Stones. However, is there an 8th stone that was not mentioned in the original prophecy? The discovery of the Amulet of Salvere and the Golden Scepter has traveled throughout the world, and has unfortunately re-awakened old foes who pose much more of a threat to the stability of The Treaty of Earthly Peace than Piki and the others could ever imagine they would face.

In the meantime, Radu Vrotsos and the Crux triad are up to their old tricks again. They have united with new enemies in yet another attempt to thwart the success of the research study, and the introduction of the lifesaving Protonus Radia to ultimately put an end to the harmony that the collaboration at Saint Juliana’s has spread throughout the world. Piki and his friends must once again come to the rescue of a world whose faith and trust in them is beyond any amount of magic that could ever exist.

The forces of good and evil are imbalanced and are having a great impact on the entities of health and sickness throughout the land, especially in the town of Hallows Creek. Once again, the race is on, but this time to find the Amethyst of Spes, and to restore the magic that was discovered at Saint Juliana’s. Many are still depending on the on the old ways of the magical world, and have forgotten The True Meaning of Magic. Maurpikios Fiddlers and the others along with the warriors of Saint Juliana’s are once again determined to restore hope and balance to the world, and most of all to teach everyone how to remember the magic.

"Maurpikios Fiddler: The Magical Amethyst of Spes is the second installment of a fantasy series by M.J. Logan. In the first book, The True Meaning of Magic, readers are introduced to young Maurpikios Fiddler with a mission to save his own life and those of his friends, while struggling against the dark forces that threaten the peaceful bond between magical and non-magical communities. In Book Two, it’s been a year after Maurpikios and his friends’ first quest. They have conquered their battle against cancer, and acquired the first of the seven stones of Saint Juliana’s. Unfortunately, another foe has awakened, so once again Maurpikios and the warriors of Saint Juliana's are needed to restore hope and peace to the world.

The continuation of the story did not disappoint me. Logan's prose is eloquent as ever, if not better. I had the pleasure of reading this together with my nephew. At more than 300 pages, The Magical Amethyst of Spes is a fairly quick read because at the end of each chapter, my nephew kept saying, “Just one more chapter”. We both love the illustrations in the book – kudos to illustrator Samaree’ Ashford. Part of the satisfaction with this story is the surprises that get handed to you even though the theme is a familiar one. Apparently this series is targeted at young readers; nevertheless, a great story is a great story. Overall, if you have or know of children who enjoy reading about magic and adventure, they are sure to enjoy this immensely."
